Bikers!

It’s getting warmer, so longer rides and the mountains beckon. Yesterday's friendly appeal has resulted in an abundance of choice for this weekend. A thousand thank-yous to our heroic ride leaders. Please contact them directly if you have questions. And (of course) let me know if you would like to lead a ride in future!

Saturday - long flattish ride or long very hilly ride
Sunday - long very hilly ride or easy Tama loop

Saturday 6th April - Longride to Hinodecho and back (Brian) 120 km

Meet at the Giant shop in Futakotamagawa at 09:30

Distance about 120 - 130km Futago - Hinodemachi - Futago

Ride up the Tamagawa to Fussa, over to Hinodemachi, on to Musashiitsukaichi and Takao and back down the Tama. Mostly flat, mostly low traffic roads. Pace moderate but with only a few stops. Lunch at combini or out of your pocket

Expect to be back at Futakotamagawa by about 15:30

Saturday 6th April - Tsuru-Dōshi Line (Francois) 135 km

As the name suggests, this is the pass connecting Dōshi village with Tsuru-shi [but has nothing to do with Tsuru-tōge  -Ed.] From Tsuru we ride to Dōshi village where we stop for lunch (with cheese). We head back to the starting point via Dōshi michi.

Meeting point: Hashimoto station JR south exit at 8:30

Distance: 135 km (2000 m of climbing)

Sunday 7th April - Three hills to the west (Peter) 77 km

Escape the concrete; see some forests!

We set off at 08:30 from the Family Mart just downhill from the north exit of Takao station. (No, not Takao-san-guchi station.) And then: up and (eventually) down to Wada pass (via Daigo rindō), down to Uenohara, up to Kōbu tunnel, and down and left into Hinohara kaidō, and later right onto Iruma Shiroiwa rindō and up to what I think is called Fujiwara pass, and then down down down to Musashi Itsukaichi station. 77 km and about 1900 metres of climbing: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/23600223

If we're feeling energetic and people are interested, we might make a little detour to see Kanoto rocks.

For an idea of how much climbing is involved, it's seven or maybe eight times the climb from Takao-san-guchi station to "the top of Takao" (i.e. Ōtarumi pass, immediately before Fujiya rāmen shop). Parts are quite a bit steeper, too. On the other hand no climb goes on and on: there are wonderful downhill sections, so you have time to recover between climbs.

Not fast (please!), if only because I am ancient and weak. We'll wait at the tops, and at turnings.

Opportunities for lunch are limited, so we'll probably eat in the forecourt of a convenience store. Make sure that you have a spare pocket, or space in a bag, for bananas, energy gels, or whatever’s your preferred preventative against bonking before or after this perfunctory lunch.

We'll encounter two patches of gravel. Each is gently downhill; if you're worried about puncturing or falling, you can get off your bike and easily trot alongside it. The rindō aren't so bad otherwise: as long as you stay alert and limit your speed downhill, you should be OK even on 700×23C. Make sure your brakes are in good condition, and bring at least one spare inner tube and know what to do with it.

Sunday 7th April - Tama Loop (Jonathan) 55 km

I can lead the classic Tama loop on Sunday. It will be my first time leading, but I know the way, I know where Peter Pan is, and I will study the guide. Meet at the Grand Hyatt at 11.00, and set off after the customary grace period.

Anyone who wants to join anywhere else on the route please contact me (before the ride) on my mobile.
