Riders!
I’m back from my adventures (blizzard in Denver, pub-crawling in New Orleans, Kayaking in Florida) and ready to ride. Thanks as always to Mike for tending to HF business in my absence.
Two rides on offer this weekend. I’ll do the standard Odaiba jaunt on Saturday and Peter et al will do an easy-ish hill climb on Sunday.
Tokyo Bay Cruise IV
The date is set for the Kevin Johnson Memorial Tokyo Bay Cruise IV, on June 1. I haven’t got around to working up the flier yet, but most of you know what to expect. Three-hour night cruise of Tokyo Bay with live music and a few surprises. ¥6000/person plus potluck food and drinks. Reserve now by emailing me or calling 090-5813-6721.
Saturday Odaiba Beginners’
Start at the Grand Hyatt at 11:00 a.m. for an easy lope out to the magical island in the bay for a brew or two. Back by 2:30 or so. Leader: me.
Sunday: Three passes and a gorge
Escape the concrete. Takao → Iriyama pass → Akiruno (and conveniencestore snacking + stocking up) → Hinohara (and likely pause fordoughnuts) → Tossaka pass → Kanoto rocks → Ōdawa pass → Okutamahttps://ridewithgps.com/routes/29688467Just 60 km, and less than 2,000 metres of climbing. (No terribly steepascents: Don't believe Ride with GPS's "30.4%".)We ride several rindō. The surface of the lower part of the descentfrom Ōdawa is a bit rough, but I'll be doing it (slowly and carefully)on 700×28C.We set off at 08:30 from outside the Family Mart that's on the cornera few metres downhill from the north exit of Takao station. We end up at Okutama station. Trains from there are infrequent. You(we?) might instead want to continue to Ōme, which is 20 km away, verygently downhill.Make sure that your bike is in good nick (especially its brakes) andthat its wheels are reasonably robust, and bring one or two spareinner tubes and know what to do with them. We'll walk over rocks along a gorge:http://power-spot22.com/kanotoiwa0take-shrine/ (feel free to ignorethe "power spot" poppycock and just enjoy the view). Not recommendedfor certain kinds of cleats. If you'd rather skip the little walk, just wait it out: you won't have to wait so long.Possible bail-out points: 25 km and 40 km (either for a gentlydownhill return to Musashi Itsukaichi station).A glance now (Friday 9 a.m.) at the weather forecast for Sunday showsrain; but it seems that there'll only be rain after 22:00 or so: Noproblem for us. However, if you want extra reassurance, thenWeather for Takao: https://tenki.jp/forecast/3/16/4410/13201/1hour.htmlWeather for Hinohara: https://tenki.jp/forecast/3/16/4410/13307/1hour.htmlWeather for Kanoto: https://tenki.jp/forecast/3/16/4410/13307/1hour.htmlWeather for Ome: https://tenki.jp/forecast/3/16/4410/13205/1hour.htmlPeter Evans peter.evans.somewhere@PROTECTED (But there's no need totell me that you'll come. Simply turn up.)
