Five rides on offer this weekend, weather permitting. Saturday, James will start things off with an early-morning beginners’ jaunt to Jonan Jima, and I’ll follow that up with an intermediate-level Tama River loop. And Peter is doing something he calls “hills out west.”

Then on Sunday I’ll do an easy jaunt out to Odaiba and Francois will do his Yamanashi “fruit line.”

Be on the alert for rain cancellation notices.

Meanwhile, I just sent a revised invitation for next Sunday’s BBQ ride. Please reserve by Friday.

Saturday: Jonan Jima

Beginners level. 30km, easy pace all welcomed. Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 7 a.m sharp. Back by 11am.

Saturday: Tama Loop.

I came down with a cold last weekend and missed this ride. Thanks to James for humbly leaping into the leadership breach. Intermediate-level. 55km, easy but fast. Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 a.m. Alternate rendezvous points: KFC in Ebisu @ 11:30, Intersection of Kan-Nana and Komazawa-Dori @ 11:45, Komazawa Park @ noon, bridge at Futako-Tamagawa (Kanagawa side) @ 12:20, Gas Bashi @ 12:45 or 1:00. Long break at Jonan Jima seaside park (across from Haneda) at 1:30 or 2:00. Convenience store lunch. Please contact me if one of these meeting spots applies to you. 090-5813-6721. Back by 3:00 or 3:30. Leader: me.

Saturday: Hills out west

Set off at 08:30 from outside the 7-11 just downhill from the north
exit of Takao station. Up (and finally down) to Wada pass via Daigo
rindō. A long and scenic descent to Uenohara. Up to Kōbu tunnel. A
short but enjoyable descent to Hinohara kaidō. Up towards Tomin no
Mori and Kazahari pass; but before the motorbike idiocy intensifies,
turn right up Iruma Shiroiwa rindō for Fujiwara pass.

Suckers for punishment are free to fork left at 56 km; but having
already been up Kazahari rindō this month, I'll instead follow the map
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27023615?beta=false and fork right.
It's downhill all the way from there, and it's a long way, with little
traffic till the 69 km point. Back to Musashi Itsukaichi station.

Trains from Musashi Itsukaichi aren't so frequent, but they are
frequent from Haijima, which isn't far (and is gently downhill). And
of course they're very frequent from Tachikawa, which isn't so much
farther.

Two thousand metres of climbing (and as much descending) over 77 km.
Wait at the tops and turnings. (Very probably for me; I do grandpa
speed.) You're welcome to pause now and again to take photos or just
to enjoy the view.

Early lunch at the konbini at 30 km. (There really aren't any other options.)

If people are interested, we could make a brief detour to the NW at
the 65 km point to see Kanoto rocks -- definitely worth seeing at some
point. (You would have to walk over rocks; choose your footwear with
this in mind.)

Bring a spare inner tube; make sure that your brakes are in good nick.
(I do not recommend the combination of rim brakes and carbon fibre
rims.) Carry whatever will ward off the bonk.

Sunday: Odaiba Beginners’

Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 a.m. for an easy, 30-km jaunt out to Odaiba. Back by 2:30 or so. Leader: me.

Sunday: Fruit Line

Yamanashi’s fruit line runs from Katsunumacho to the crystal line via Enzan and goes through different fruit tree fields (mainly vineyards) As it is harvest season, it is expected to see some grapes. We stop at 2 vineries for grape juice tasting (a few years ago non-French fellow riders complain about the wine)
Coffee in Uenohara and lunch in Katsunuma.
Leader: Francois

Distance 112 km
Elevation 2km
Meeting point: Hashimoto JR Station south exit at 8:15 or Sagamiko station at 9:00 ready to roll.
