The loneliness of the social-distanced cyclist
If I have to stay home another weekend I’m going to punch someone. So we have two rides planned for Saturday (none Sunday). Jack will take a group of ambitious riders willing to take a long train ride on a lengthy hill-climb, and I’ll keep things exciting closer to home with a beginners’ ride out to Odaiba.
But please observe social-distancing common sense. Riders MUST bring a face mask and wear it at the meet-up and during breaks. But not necessarily while riding. And keep your distance and forgo handshakes and hugs. Post-ride pub gatherings are also unwise.
Saturday TominNoMori
Musashi-Itsukaichi station —> TominNoMori —> OkuTama station —> Tamagawa Cycle Path —> Cross Coffee
Start Point:
Musashi-Itsukaichi station
April 4, 2020 @ 9:30am (30 minute grace)
Description:
Advanced ride into the hills west of Tokyo.
We may split the group into tourist pace / faster paced riders.
First half to OkuTama station is 62km. I predict a four hour effort. OkuTama is a good bail point.
Second half from OkuTama station to Cross Coffee is 55km. I predict a 2:45 effort. Multiple bail points along the way.
Musashi-Itsukaichi station —> TominNoMori (30km)
First 20km is at most 2%. Remaining 10km is 5% to 9%.
We’ll take a short break here for toilets and dango.
TominNoMori —> OkuTama station
Another 3km (33km mark) of climbing to the summit marker. We’ll strike a pose here for photos.
We’ll do a 4km (37km mark) decent to panoramic photo spot. It’s a good chance to stop and make sure people are okay descending at speed. We’ll take a poll to see if people want to stop to eat at the bottom.
Another 11km (46km mark) of descending. The curves are predictable and I have to say, this is one of my favorite descents in the Tokyo area. There’s a small restaurant where we might take a break.
Then 15km (62km) of steady downhill into the Okutama Station area. We’ll be taking some bypasses to avoid some tunnels.
OkuTama station —> Tamagawa Cycle Path —> Cross Coffee
55km of light descending and flat river riding. I think it will take about 2 hours 45 minutes of effort. If you need combini break, shout it out and we’ll stop at the next one we encounter. At the end, we’ll have an espresso. I think I’m going to get an americano and some cake.
Noborito Station is close by.
It’s another 20km back into the Metro area.
I will muddle my way back to the Futako area.
