Sunday ‘Ride a Rindo’
Ride overview: This Sunday, come enjoy the illicit pleasure of riding a closed Rindo (forest road)! We will start at Takaosanguchi Station, warm up on and head down Otarumi pass (and hopefully get a quick glimpse of Fuji) then leave the beaten path to sneak past a gate and into the peace and quiet of a tree covered Rindo. After that it’s just a (careful) downhill blitz, lakeside cruising, bridge storming and coffee and snacks at Zebra before returning to Takao station. The ambitious can continue on with me, mostly along bike paths traversing three rivers back into the city.
The total distance is ~55 km and total vertical gain is ~1,500 m (according to RWGPS, which is probably an overestimation). There are two sustained climbs with a few steep sections. This is an intermediate-advanced ride due to the climbing and a slightly technical descent. The pace will be slow, but scorchers are welcome to fly and we can regroup at the tops/bottoms of the passes.
Meeting point: We’ll meet at 8:30 am at the Family Mart north of (left out of the exit from) Takaosanguchi station (https://goo.gl/maps/pXLSKZVP558pCY3X6) and leave at 8:50 am sharp.
Alternative meeting point: I will be meeting a few people at the Yanokuchi Lawson (https://goo.gl/maps/15kecTPdC8MVCRTDA) at 7 am (leaving at 7:15 am) and riding from there to Takaosanguchi station. You are welcome to join us there if you are interested, but let me know if you will meet there as we may leave earlier if everyone is accounted for.
Getting there: There is a direct Keio Line train that leaves Shinjuku station at 7:26 amand arrives at Takao station at 8:19 am: https://goo.gl/maps/vEtS5wWeDCPQztba6
Getting back: Trains back to Tokyo leave Takao station regularly.
Food and drink: You should pick up some snacks at the Family Mart where we start as we won’t be stopping until Zebra Café at 40 km in (~12 pm). You might want to also bring an extra water bottle as there are no stores/vending machines on the second climb.
Duration: The ride along with the Zebra stop will take up to 5 hours so we should arrive back at Takao station at ~2:00 pm.
Weather, etc: it looks like it will be warm (25 degrees) in the area, but you never know at the edge of the rainy season so be prepared.
