I’d say something like, “Next year has GOT to be better than this last one,” but that’s exactly what we were saying a year ago, wasn’t it? Whatever. Get you shots and we’ll keep riding.
Saturday is of course Brian’s Yamanote Line New Year’s ride, as detailed in a note sent out a few days ago. I’ll post it again at the bottom of this letter, and note that Matt will lead a group out to the Shinagawa starting point from the Grand Hyatt, leaving at 7:30.
On the 2nd, I’ll do our usual Odaiba beginners’ ride.
Sunday Odaiba Beginners’
Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 for a quick, keep-fit ride out to the island in the bay for a brew or two. Back by around 2:30.
As usual, masks up at starting point and stores, otherwise optional while riding. Bring proof of vaccination and an eco bag.
Have a great year!

Resend of Yamanote Line notice:
New Year’s Day Yamanote Adventure
Each January 1st it is our tradition to ride around the Yamanote loop, stopping twice for grub and beer. With the slight relaxations of the COVID-19 mitigation rules, Brian is planning to lead the ride and Mike may dash around taking photographs.
We have recently learned that Ehukai Beach, closed for over a year due to the Olympic brouhaha, will celebrate its grand reopening on New Year’s Day, so to join in that, I have modified the route. Instead of going counter clockwise, we’ll go clockwise; instead of starting at Ebisu, we’ll start at Shinagawa; instead of a complete loop, we’ll break off the Yamanote at Akihabara and go out to Odaiba.
(Here’s a route map from past years to give you an idea of how it will go from Shinagawa to where we leave the standard route at Ueno Park.
Meet: Saturday, Jan 1 (of course), 8:15 at Shinagawa Station; the Koonan koban by the bottom of the ATRE escalator. (NOTE NEW TIME and PLACE; This is the Koonan side, not the Takanawa side of Shinagawa Station)
* Stop peeling those mikan.
* Recover from the night before.
* Only 365 more days for riding in 2022.
* Start the New Year off right with a ride around the Yamanote!
* Ride through some parts of town we usually don't visit.
Ready to leave at 8:30 promptly (to be sure of timely arrival at our lunch place)
Note: If you don’t know where the starting point is, Matt will leave the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 7:30 to bike to show you the way. Matt: 070-4328-2837
Lunch in Nippori, with beer. Less than 2000 yen.
Second beer stop at Ehukai Beach. Odaiba (The usual beer stop on Odaiba rides)
We aim to be at Ehukai Beach by 14:00.
Route outline
Shinagawa, Old Tokaido, Meguro River, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Kanda River, Jiyugakuin, Tabata. Nippori, Ueno, Ameyokocho, Akihabara, Tokyo Air Terminal, Tsukijima, Odaiba. From Odaiba back to Hamatsucho via Tsukiji or what ever you like.
Bring: Warm clothes, water bottle, helmet, pump, spare tube, and your bike. Mask-up for stops. If you think you might want to quit early, bring your bike bag. Although less than 50 km from Shinagawa to Odaiba, it is still an intermediate level ride. Forecast looks good; sunny with a high around 5ºC and the wind is expected to be moderate, Force 3 (less than 12 miles per hour / 5.5 meters per second).
