THE
LAST
RIDE
(this year)

And the first. The latest weather forecast for Saturday is 14 degrees, sunny and moderate wind. So let’s do an Odaiba Plus ride. Sunday looks wet, but on Monday (12 deg., partly cloudy and quite windy) Brian will lead his traditional New Year’s Day Yamanote Loop ride. You’re going to need some exercise to counteract all the upcoming year-end feasting and revelry.

Saturday Odaiba Plus

Our regular jaunt out to the Beach by the Bay for a Brew or Two, but with 15km tacked on to the front end to make the total about 45-50km. Canals, rivers, windmills, “dinosaur bridge,” sailboats, parks, dedicated bike paths, and more. Drinks and snacks at the beach. Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 a.m. Back by 3:30 at the latest.

This next bit from Brian:

Ganjitsu Ride Around the Yamanote

I came down with a cold but I am improving so I am optimistic that I will be able to lead the Half-Fast traditional Round the Yamanote on New Years Day

This year offers us an extra day of riding, and I would hate to miss a day of it.  If the cold makes me cancel, I’ll ask Don to post a notice on the 31st.  (But if anyone else is prepared to be an alternate leader, let Don and I know.)

The place we have been stopping for lunch in Nippori unfortunately closed in 2022, but I found a new Indian place in Yanaka. Further, the rain will stop in the early morning on the first and it will probably be sunny by noon.

Let’s meet at 9:00 by the flagpole and Koran on the Konan side of Shinagawa Station, East Exit (Outside the Yamanote Loop, Not Route 15).  If you come along Route 15, check a map to figure out how you want to cross the tracks. We’ll go around clockwise and end in Shinagawa in the early afternoon.

About 50 km. No big hills but some short steep climbs.

Godzilla

Apropos of nothing remotely related to cycling:

When I’m not cycling, I’m writing about movies for Metropolis Magazine, and I just wanted to say DO NOT MISS Godzilla Minus One. A new monster movie that, quite surprisingly, is making some serious waves, including Oscar Buzz. 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, I know; you’re not interested in movies about giant, destructive lizards. Neither am I, really. But this tight little low-budget thriller is putting Hollywood to shame. Here’s my review:  https://metropolisjapan.com/movies/godzilla-minus-one/ Toho Cinemas in Roppongi Hills is still showing it once a  day with English subtitles. But not for much longer. Check that out here: https://hlo.tohotheater.jp/net/schedule/009/TNPI2000J01.do

And while I’m at it, Blue Eye Samurai, on Netflix, is also highly recommended. In English.

========================

So a huge if belated Merry Christmas and high hopes for a great new year. Get well, Paul!
