SUMMER

…seems to be holding off for a bit longer, with temps this weekend at 28 or 29. Lots of humidity, though, so be sure to keep hydrated, and don’t forget the sunscreen.

NOTE: When the temps top 32 or so, we shift to night rides, starting at 6:00 p.m. And ride leaders should remember that we won’t publicize daytime hill-climbs and such in the very hot weather.

So this week a Saturday run to Odaiba and a Sunday Tama River loop. Also Peter has planned one of his scenic hill-climbs for Saturday.

Saturday Odaiba Jaunt

Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00a.m. for an easy 30-km lope out to the magical island in the bay for a beach bar lunch and a brew or two. Back usually by 2:00. Coffee.

Saturday: Get high in Tokyo

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42942086

We set off at 08:45 from the Family Mart (
https://goo.gl/maps/biG8KywMm9F2NUwp8 ) that's 1.5 km west of
Musashi-Itsukaichi station, and head west for Hinohara and the top of
Kazahari pass (1146 metres, and thus the highest point of any road in
Tokyo, and close to a kilometre above where we started).

We'll go up by the most popular of the three routes. It's scenic and
not particularly steep (I've done it on a cheapo little folding bike).
It's then a long descent to the western end of lake Okutama, along the
lake, and eastwards to Okutama via "Mukashi-michi", with its curious
sights and optional side-trips across exciting little bridges.
Mukashi-michi has some gravel, but this isn't rough; and you can
bypass the gravel section if you prefer (or if your tyres are
delicate).

A proper lunch, sitting around a table. (No rush, but no dawdling.)

Finish at your choice among Okutama station, Ōme station, Haijima
station, or wherever you like along Tamagawa.

Make sure that your brakes are in good condition; bring lights for the
numerous tunnels, sunblock, a spare inner tube, cash for lunch, and
water.

"Leader" (scare quotes because old and slow*): Peter Evans

* I shan't be surprised, let alone offended, if anyone goes ahead of me.

(A train leaving Tachikawa at 07:36 reaches Musashi-Itsukaichi at the
convenient time of 08:13.)

Sunday Tama Loop

Intermediate-level. 55km, easy but fast. Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 a.m. Alternate rendezvous points: KFC in Ebisu @ 11:30, Intersection of Kan-Nana and Komazawa-Dori @ 11:45, Komazawa Park @ noon, bridge at Futako-Tamagawa (Kanagawa side) @ 12:20, Gas Bashi @ 12:45 or 1:00. Long break at Jonan Jima seaside park (across from Haneda) at 1:30 or 2:00. Convenience store lunch. Please contact me if one of these meeting spots applies to you. 090-5813-6721. Back by 3:00 or 3:30.  Coffee.
