THE
HITS
JUST
KEEP ON
COMING

This post-typhoon weather just keeps throwing at us perfect weekend cycling weather (23-24 degrees). So Saturday let’s do a 45-km Odaiba Plus ride and follow that up on Sunday with a 35-km jaunt out Haneda way.

Saturday Odaiba Plus

We tack 15 km on to our frequent run out to the beach at Odaiba to make a 45-km romp over bridges, along canals, down dedicated bike paths and through forests, with a beach bar lunch. Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 a.m. Back by around 3:30 at the latest.

Sunday Jonan Plus

A jolly jaunt to Jonan Jima, a little beach park across from Haneda Airport, to watch the planes come in and then watch them go away again. 35 km. Start at the Grand Hyatt at 11:00. Back by 2:30 or so.

Please bring along an eco bag for your convenience store lunch. We try to cut down on single-use plastic bags.

Tokyo Bay Fireworks

Next Saturday, the 24th, the city will resume, after a nine-year hiatus, the wonderful Tokyo Bay Fireworks. We used to bike out there to a place that was not the closest to the pyrotechnics but not too far, and near toilets and a convenience store. They’re charging ¥5,000-¥10,000 for seats at the venue. But that was in the summer. I’m thinking of doing a night ride out there this year. A bit cooler, but still doable if you bring a jacket (and something to sit on).

It all depends on the weather of course, and i’ll modify the route as both big bridges to Odaiba  will be closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Send me your thoughts. Or suggestions of better vantage points.
