Lunch at the Michinoeki where the bridge where hiway 354 crosses the Ura.
After going around Kasumigaura, we have the option of bailing at Tsuchigarua if it is late or we are tired or both (about 170km).

Iwase-Tsuchiura (and back) segment
Around Kasumigaura segment
This is a mostly self-supporting enduro ride with little stopping so sure to bring food as we won’t have much time to stand around at the Kombini.
So be sure to have what you need with you — food, water, tube, pump, rinko bukuro, etc etc
If you are interested in going, please let me know.

Saturday: KG Lee: Chiba Craziness (147km)
An exploration of the Chiba peninsula on Saturday. We take the 08:03 JR Sazanami from Akihabara to the Kimitsu (1hr 13min train ride) on the West Coast. There is one major climb within the first 15km, ~350m up Kamo-zan, but apart from that it's mostly flat apart from several ~100m elevation climbs. Total elevation gain is 2000m per Strava, but realistically <1500m. We will have a sit-down lunch in Kamogawa at about 45km which is also the bail-out point. The last 50km is mostly flat/gentle downhill with an expected tailwind, before finishing in Narita (town, not airport) where we will take the Keisei or JR Narita line back to Ueno or Tokyo (~1.5hrs).
I'm a slow climber so climbs are WATT, and my flat pace is around 27-28km/h so I expect around a 20km/h moving average (likely faster due to tailwind). Factoring in lunch and ~5min breaks per hour means 1.5hr of breaks + 7hrs rolling gets us to Narita by around 6pm. It will be a warm day (26C) so bring two bottles, emergency food, and sunblock.
Disclaimer: this is my first time riding in the area so it might be an adventure.
Saturday — Andrew: The Backer Looper,
Long intermediate. Starti from Futakotamagawa
This is an anticlockwise variant of the classic Super Looper ride. The full loop is 110-120 km but if you bring a bike bag, you can bail out at Tachikawa station about half way round. It's long but mostly flat and I won't rush it, so consider it an upper intermediate.
Meet in front of the Giant bike shop under Futako bridge at 10:00 for 10:10 departure. If running late, call 070-2829-4843. Also meet at Roppongi Hills Hyatt at 11:00. No waiting unless we are early. Thereafter Palace, Ueno, Arakawa (conveni lunch), Shiki, Tokorozawa, Tamako, Potato Street, afternoon tea near Tachikawa station, and back down Tamagawa.
Leader: Andrew
Sado Island next weekend; one space available
One person has dropped out of a group (men and women) going to Sado Island (the big one off Niigata) for the Long Ride event next weekend . If you would like to join us in this huge cycling event on a beautiful island, email:
welford@PROTECTED today. We will leave early morning on Saturday 18th and get back to Tokyo early evening on Monday 20th (so book a day off work).
The cost is 39,500 yen, which covers all travel and two nights in a minshuku with good dinners and breakfasts. You will also need to get an official bike inspection in a local shop, which costs about 2,000 yen. The entry was made for a 45 km ride with a pottery class, but you can probably sneak onto the 100/130 km ride if you prefer. More info at

After lunch in Hadano, we ride along Sagami river and Sagami bay to finish at Katase-Enoshima station where you can get on the train or ride back home.

Sunday — Mike: Three Sisters
Meet: 09:00, Sunday 12 May, 7-Eleven at the Route 20 junction near JR Takao Station north exitRide: Mountainous 50 km loop with approx. 1300 m elevation gainRoute: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/2807529Leader: Mike 080-3403-0239 mike2@PROTECTED
RSVP - I will cancel if the weather forecast turns nasty (it’s OK at the moment), so let me know if you plan to join
We’ll head north from the station, warming up with a couple of little bumps past Hachiōji’s fine cemeteries, then 10 km of gentle climbing along Jinba-kaidō to reach the start of Wada-tōge. The west approach to Wada is 3.4 km long and 345 m up, so around 10% grade. Ouch! Once over the top we’re in Yamanashi Prefecture. A 7 km downhill brings us to our second climb. The majority of Bijodani-rindō is closed to traffic, so it’s perfectly quiet. Riding 7.3 km to elevate by 363 m at the top, Myōō-tōge, this one is easier than Wada, although there’s a 400 m section at 12% that feels like a cliff whenever I do it. After a 5.6 km downhill, our final climb is just 4.4 km / 180 m to Ōtarumi-tōge, a.k.a. Mt Takao, where we can feast on rāmen, gyōza, ice cream, beer, etc. at the Fujiya Ramen Emporium before descending 7.6 km back to out starting point at Takao Station.
We’ll WATT ("wait at the top") for each pass. The pace will be encouraging and non-competitive. I’ll go as fast as I can, which is not very fast. No shame if anyone needs to stop and/or walk for a bit. We’ll take breaks as necessary. If you haven’t done any steep climbing at all this year, you won’t have a good time on this ride. If you’ve done some climbing, and want to do more, this is a cool route as the three climbs get progressively easier. Retiring early is possible: anywhere between Wada and Myōō, freewheel almost all the way to Fujino station.
Blah-blah: water bottles, sunscreen, pockets full of food, bike bag.

The amusement never ends.
