Hot bikers!

We’ve got six rides in a wide variety on offer this warm weekend. On Saturday, James will do a flat if longish Ice Cream ride, Akira will take a group out to Boso, Francois is doing a hill-climb in Jukkokutōge, and I’ll take a far less ambitious yet still adventurous pack on a NIGHT RIDE to Odaiba.  Sunday Kelvin is inviting all to a KIWL training ride, and I will again, yet unapologetically, cruise the Tama River intermediate loop.

Tokyo Bay Cruise Update

The boat’s full. Those that have signed up please be SURE you know the departure point. if you’re not sure, go out there on a recon mission beforehand. Don’t miss the boat!

Expect about 50-60km from central Tokyo one way, but all flat. Easy, social pace.

Many of you ask me, Akira ? Many Akiras ?
I am shorter Akira,  not the taller professor Akira. lol

Saturday — Francois: Jukkokutōge

Most people get the cable car to reach the Jukkoku pass, but there is actually a pathway starting from Atami Higanesan cemetery  up to the pass so that you do not need to rely on the assistance of an electric motor.  The climb to the cemetery is short but steep (O-gata suberidome means officially that slope > 7%)

Coffee in Yugawara and lunch at Atami port. From Atami we avoid the traffic on road 135 by climbing Jukkokutōgeizusan line. It’s steep but no O-gata suberidome

On our way back to the starting point we visit Namatsuru cape. To go down to the beach there are a few stairs to walk up and down.

Route: https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/2325504010

Distance: 106 km (2 km climbing)

Meet at Odawara station east exit at 8:30 near the lockers.

Saturday — Don: NIGHT RIDE!

If you’ve never enjoyed the sight of Tokyo all lit up at night, you have a treat in store. This is our usual Odaiba beginners’ ride, but it couldn’t be more unusual. Start at the Grand Hyatt at 6:30 p.m. Distance 30 km, back probably by 9:00 to a to-be-agreed-upon place for dinner. Maybe pizza. This ride is always a blast.

Sunday — Kelvin: Tomin-no-Mori & Kazahari-toge and to Oume

Meet at 09:00 a.m. Musashi-Itsukaichi Station - by station exit.

This is a ride with a distance of approximately 80 km, and roughly 1,100 meters of climbing.

We will cycle from the station up and to Tomin-no-Mori (a rest spot). Then an additional climb to the summit "Kazahari-toge" which is the highest point in Greater Tokyo at 1200m. Then we will enjoy a thrilling descent towards Okutama lake. There is a view point which we can stop for a spectcular view of the Okutama area. Then we will have a sit down lunch by the lake and then to Oume via numerous tunnels.

All climbs will be "WATT" (wait at the top) and pace will be adjusted to the slowest rider in the group.

Bring the usual (spare inner tube, mini tool, water bottles and consider also a bug repellent). Two water bottles would be a good idea too as the weather looks hot and a tail light for passage through the numerous tunnels on the road to Oume.

Suggested train: From the Shinjuku area, the JR Chuo/Ome Special Rapid Service 3 (also called the Holiday Rapid Akigawa)  train leaves Shinjuku station at 07:44. The train splits at Haijima (leaving 08:25) so make sure you are on the right end of it for arriving at Musashi-Itsukaichi at 08:48.

Sunday — Don: Tama River Loop

Intermediate-level. 55km, easy but fast. Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 a.m. Alternate rendezvous points: KFC in Ebisu @ 11:30, Intersection of Kan-Nana and Komazawa-Dori @ 11:45, Komazawa Park @ noon, bridge at Futako-Tamagawa (Kanagawa side) @ 12:20, Gas Bashi @ 12:45 or 1:00. Long break at Jonan Jima seaside park (across from Haneda) at 1:30 or 2:00. Convenience store lunch. Please contact me if one of these meeting spots applies to you. 090-5813-6721. Back by 3:00 or 3:30.
