Four passes: Iriyama, Wada, Myōō, Ōtarumi (Peter)
It's well under 60 km, but this route
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30338679?beta=false is all thriller,
no filler: 1800 metres of ascents, 1800 metres of descents.
There's a dearth of convenience stores, let alone restaurants. Fill
your pockets with jet fuel before we set off -- at 08:15 from in front
of Musashi Itsukaichi station. (There's a 7-11 across the road from
the station.)
Recommended half-train: ホリデー快速あきがわ1号 (Horidē Kaisoku Akigawa ichigō),
which leaves Shinjuku at 06:46 and arrives at Musashi Itsukaichi at
07:55: https://tinyurl.com/holiday-kaisoku . It's the rear half of a
train whose front half arrives at Okutama. (The two half-trains split
at Haijima station. Do not go to Okutama!)
Bail-out points at 29 km (for Fujino station) and 42 km (for Sagamiko
station). The route ends at Takao station, on the Chūō and Keiō lines.
Bring a spare inner tube, two bottles of water, UV block, bug
repellent. Make sure that your brakes are in good nick.
Grandpa speeds: lively (your leader, Akira Kihara) or enfeebled (your
lanterne rouge, Peter Evans). Waiting at the tops. There's no need to
say in advance that you're coming; but if you have a question:
