Three rides now planned for Saturday… if you’re concerned about go/no-go because of typhoon etc., please contact the leader of the ride.
Saturday 27th Takao and Back (Jeff)
Jeff will lead a ride on Saturday to Takao-san, then back to Tokyo.
8:30 AM departure from the customary meeting spot in front of the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills
Alternatively, riders can join on the Kawasaki side of the bridge at Futago-Tamagawa for a 9:25 AM departure up the Tama River path
Lunch at the ramen shop after an easy climb to the pass. Then follow the same route back to Roppongi.
If the likelihood of afternoon rain is higher than 50%, I will cancel the ride.
Saturday 27th Yabitsu rindo (Peter & Akira)
Saturday 27th: Yabitsu via four rindō. Only 74 km, only 1750m of climbing. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30655715?beta=false
We start at 09:00 from outside the 7-11 just downhill from the north exit of Takao station; take a gentle route to and around lake Miyagase; up Yabitsu the easy way; down toward the south, just after the "doughnuts" end, we turn left -- though if you're tired or pressed for time you can instead go straight ahead (simply follow the road to get to Hadano station) -- along a route unexplored by Google Street Map; have lunch; and we end up at Isehara station (Odakyū Odawara line) by 15:00.
The combination of carbon fibre rims and rim brakes isn't recommended, and your brakes should be in good nick; but that aside, just about any bike and wheels should be OK. Bring a spare inner tube.
Plotter and navigator: Akira Kihara. Somewhere in the back: Peter Evans
The weather forecast still (Friday noon) hasn't settled down. To check that the ride is still on, mail peter.evans.somewhere@PROTECTED
Saturday 27th Night Odaiba (Matt)
If you’ve never cycled the super city after dark before, it’s a whole new experience. Start in front at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 6:00 p.m. We’ll take an easy pace out to the beach on the bay, which is extra magical (and cooler) at night. 30 km round-trip. Back by 9:00 or so.
Please make sure all your bike lamps are charged or have fresh batteries.

Next weekend - from Friday night on 2nd to Sunday 4th, there’s another opportunity from Tim Smith for half-fasters to visit and stay at the GS Astuto 'Secret Cycling Base' in Kiryu, Gunma. It takes a couple of hours to get to, but is a wonderful change of scenery and pace from central Tokyo. We can share rooms to keep costs down, but at ¥6000 per room per night it’s very affordable. There’s lots of great riding in the quiet hills. And that weekend the town will be running a huge summer festival. If you’re interested, please let Tim (spike@PROTECTED) know soon. I’ll be going.
Finally, our colorful new jerseys, caps and wind jackets have been made and shipped, and I’ll receive them in a few days. I’ll be in touch with everyone who has ordered to get money.
