Riders et al,
Saturday Peter will lead a leisurely hill-climb out Tossaka, Kazahari and Nippara way, and I’ll do our usual Odaiba beginners’ jaunt.
Sunday is of course our annual BBQ picnic. The deadline for registering for this ride has passed, but a select few can be added given sufficient grovelling.
Saturday — Odaiba Beginners'
Start at the Grand Hyatt at 11:00 p.m.for an easy 30km lope out to the magical beach in the bay for a brew or two.
Back by 2:30 or so. Leader: me. 090-5813-6721
Saturday -- Tossaka, Kazahari, Nippara
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30919305?beta=falseTossaka: a handsome little pass. Kazahari: a bigger one. We descend, have lunch, make a diversion up and down the unusually good-lookingNippara valley, and end up at Ōme station. We set off at 08:20 from outside the 7-11 opposite Musashi Itsukaichistation. Get to the station by the ホリデー快速あきがわ1号 (Horidē kaisokuAkigawa ichigō), which is the front one third -- the car(riage)s withthe highest numbers -- of a JR train leaving Shinjuku at 06:46 (andKokubunji at 07:06, Tachikawa at 07:15, etc). If you're in the correctcar(riage), you'll arrive at Musashi-Itsukaichi at 07:55. (The traindivides into two at Haijima station; its longer half goes to Okutamastation, which you don't want.)This way up to Kazahari is steeper but more interesting than theregular Tomin-no-Mori route, and free of petrol-powered candidates forDarwin Awards. The attraction to the masses of Nippara valley is Nippara cave, at thetop. I don't propose to enter, but if you'd like to, you'd be welcome;however: (i) I wouldn't wait for you; (ii) it will cost you; (iii) ifyou wear no more than a summer jersey you'll be refrigerated; (iv) Idon't recommend either wearing cleats (even if covered) or goingbarefoot.I go at grandpa pace. Please either wait for me at the tops, or don'tdo so (no offence taken). I'll wait for anyone who's behind me(unlikely!).Make sure your brakes are in good nick. Bring a spare inner tube; andalso good lights (front and back) for all the tunnels.Bail-out points: 15 km (turn right); 25 km (turn left); 51/72 km(Okutama station).peter.evans.somewhere@PROTECTED
Sunday — Amazing Italian Gourmet BBQ
This ride takes place in two stages. Brian will lead the first group, starting at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 10:00 a.m. sharp. This group will do a full Arakawa Loop (about 70km total) and meet up at the river with the second group, led by me, that starts from the Hyatt at 11:00. This group takes a more direct, easier route (about 40 km). The two groups will then proceed together to the venue, Wakasu Park (out by the "Dinosaur Bridge” at the far end of the golf course island.
The forecast is for a comfortable 24 degrees and dry.
You can head back whenever you like if you know the way. Otherwise we’ll start back at around 3:00.
Bring a bike lock, as we will be leaving our bikes at the park’s entrance (there’s a guard).
I will be collecting the ¥5000 fee at the Hyatt. Exact change appreciated.
As mentioned earlier, non-biking family and friends can get there by taking the Keiyo Line (from Tokyo or Hachobori on the Hibiya Line) to Shin Kiba Station and then the #11 bus, or a taxi, from there. Food served from noon to 2:00, drinks until 3:00. When you enter the park, look for a large Italian flag. Please pay your fee to Stefano’s wife Shigeko.
Warning: some sort of water-based weapon would be a good idea.
For self-defense, you understand.
The amusement never ends
