I just love November
Cycling weather. This weekend temps 17-20 degrees and sunny. So we have four rides on offer, a pair of lunatic-level rides on Saturday courtesy Jack and KG Lee, a beginner-level jaunt also on Saturday, and a Kasai Rinkai adventure on Sunday.
Masks up, please. And bring an eco-bag. There’s no reason Half-Fast should be generating dozens of single-use plastic bags for our convenience store lunches. (I just watched the documentary “Plastic Ocean.”) Not a requirement (yet), but violators will be subject to a withering stink-eye from Il Padrone.
Saturday Takao-san plus Honzawa Dam
Summary:
This is an intermediate+ ride. It’s double the distance of the HFC Tamagawa and has some hills thrown in.
Approximately a 110km route that starts on the Tamagawa and tours the northern Sagamiko area. There are various points to join and bail.
We start on the Tamagawa then cut westward on the Asakawa. There’s a bit of urban riding before we hit the Takao-san area. Now we’re 20 minutes away to get to Zebra coffee, rolling through two puncher climbs. After a recharge, we have two 10 minute climbs and take a breather at the Honzawa Dam. Then we fight through some urban traffic to get on the Onekan (route 158) where we will ride through rolling hills back down to the Tamagawa.

Saturday Doshimichi to Yamanakako
This 106km ride departs from Takao station, then goes past Sagamiko to join up with Doshimichi. After an extended climb (but mostly not-to-steep... 5-7%), we'll get to Yamanako Lake where hopefully Fuji-san will make an appearance. We then swing south past Gotemba to finish at Mishima Shinkansen Stn. There is significant climbing (1700m gain), but all in the first half of the ride so we'll be cruising downhill in the afternoon. Intermediate-advanced due to the climbing but at tourist pace and WATT.
Meet at 9:30am at JR Takao Station (recommended train: Chuo line departing 8:24am from Tokyo) at the bus stop. There are multiple tunnels so front+rear lights are required, and temperatures on the Fuji plain will be at least 5C colder than Tokyo so pring an extra layer especially for the descent. Bring enough money/credit card for the Shinkansen ride back (4600 yen).
