Well, winter’s here.

But that doesn’t stop Half Fast. We generally bike all winter. Just get out the cold-weather gear, buy sone long-fingered gloves and booties and layer up.  This weekend’s weather is forecast for 9-10 degrees and sunny, mostly.

This week I’m offering two beginners’ rides, one to Odaiba and one to Jonan Jima. The latter can be extended if desired. See below. Also in this message, information on our traditional New Year’s Day Yamanote Loop ride, COVID-modified.

Note: If you get separated from the group, do two things: First, stay where you are. We will send someone back to pick you up. We don’t leave anyone behind. Then call (not text or email) the leader. Phone numbers are always included with ride announcements.

Masks up, please. And bring an eco bag for your convenience store lunch to help Half Fast reduce our use of plastic bags to zero.

Saturday Odaiba Beginners’

Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 a.m. for an easy 30-km lope out to the magical island in the bay for a drink and a snack. Back by 2:30. Leader: me.

Sunday Haneda Beginners’

Start at the Hyatt at 11 for another easy 30-km ride out to Jonan Jima, a beach park across the channel from the airport. Leader: me. Those living to the west that we usually pick up at the river on our Tama Loop rides can start with us at the Hyatt and head home from Jonan in effectively a reverse, clockwise Tama Loop. If you know the way.

New Year’s Day Yamanote Adventure

This from Mike:

Each January 1st it is our tradition to ride around the Yamanote loop, keeping fairly close to the route of the eponymous train line.

Normally we’d stop twice for grub and beer. However, to minimize any coronavirus risk, this year will instead have a simple picnic in the park at Nippori - either bring your own food or buy from a nearby convenience store. Not warm. Not glamorous. Safe.

Riders will wear masks.

Here’s a route map, although there will be some minor tweaks due to construction work.

Meet: Friday 1st Jan (of course), 9:15 at Ebisu Station; the koban by the bottom of the ATRE escalator. [here]

* Stop peeling those mikan.
* Only 364 more days for riding in 2021.
* Start the New Year off right with a ride around the Yamanote!
* Ride through some parts of town we usually don't visit.
* Transmit only the joy of cycling, and certainly no coronavirus.

Ready to leave at 9:30 promptly, after a masked group photo.

We aim to be back at Ebisu by 16:00, and the ride will then finish.

Bring: Face mask, warm clothes, water bottle, helmet, pump, spare tube, and your bike. If you think you might want to bail early, bring your bike bag. Although less than 50 km, it is still an intermediate level ride. Weather in recent years has been sunny with a high around 9ºC, but we’ll say go/no-go depending on the forecast.

If you feel at all unwell: Stay away please. There will be more rides.
