GOLDEN WEEKDAY RIDES

Whereas: As of this writing, the weather for next weekend is looking rather damp. However: The three Golden Week holidays (3, 4, 5) are looking considerably dryer and partly/mostly cloudy at 23-25 degrees, so we have five rides for you to choose from. Wednesday Paul will lead an intermediate ride to Lake Tama, and on Thursday another intermediate ride to Takahata Fudo. Also on Thursday, I’ll keep it closer to home with an easy jaunt out to Jonan Jima. Then on Friday, I’ll do an Odaiba Plus ride, which James will lengthen a bit more with a longer route and an earlier start. So make that four and a half rides.

In line with Tokyo’s new guidelines, face masks are optional. But do bring an eco bag for any convenience store lunches. Half-Fast seriously tries to cut down on single-use plastics. Seriously. Vaccinated riders only, please. DON’T FORGET THE SUNBLOCK.

Tokyo Bay Cruise V

About a dozen spots left on our gala June 3rd potluck booze cruise. Printable details here.

Wednesday - Early Lake Tama

We will meet at 10.00 a.m. (sharp) at the West entrance to Komazawa Park. From there we go via Inokashira Dori and Hitomi Kaido to Inokashira Zoo (arrive there about 10.30 a.m.) , and from there to the cycle road at Sekimae on the far side of Kichijoji.

We follow that cycle road (dodging pedestrians, it may be crowded due to GW) straight up to the lake where we will eat a Combini lunch.

The energetic folk can cycle round the lake while the not so energetic folk have a rest.

Then we head back to Komazawa Park via Keyaki-dori and the Tama River. Total distance 65-80 kms which makes this an INTERMEDIATE++ ride on distance although the pace will by my usual geriatric meander.

It will take us about 2 hours to get to the lake, 40 minutes to go round the lake and probably more than 2 hours back. I would guess we’d get back to Komazawa Park around 4 p.m..

Please bring spare tubes and a pump etc. It is starting to warm up (finally) so fill up your water bottles. Eco bags, helmets as usual. Sunblock recommended. Masks optional but recommended (as there are a lot of insects on the river sections at this time of year). Please note that Lake Tama is NOT Oku-Tama; it is a man-made reservoir near the Seibu Lion’s baseball stadium and just a stone’s throw from Saitama.

Thursday - Early Takahata Fudo (Paul)

We will meet at 10.00 a.m. (sharp) at the West entrance to Komazawa Park. From there we go to Futakobashi and up the river (far side up to Koremasabashi and then on the Tokyo side for a while before crossing back over. We'll have a brief wander round the temple area, make any desired souvenir purchases before taking an early lunch.

From there we'll head up the Kawasaki Kaido and cross back over to the Tokyo side (near Tachikawa) and back down the river.

Total distance probably 70 kms which makes this an INTERMEDIATE ride on distance although the pace will be beginner level.

I would guess we’d get back to Komazawa Park around 3.30 p.m..

Please bring spare tubes and a pump etc. It will be warm and sunny so fill up your water bottles. Eco bags, helmets as usual. Sunblock recommended. Masks optional but recommended (as there are a lot of insects on the river sections at this time of year).

Thursday Jonan

Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 for an easy, 30-35km lope out to a beach across from Haneda Airport. Convenience store lunch. Back by around 2:00

Friday Odaiba Plus Plus

Start at the Hyatt at 11:00 for our usual ride out to the beach on the bay, but with about 20km tacked on to the front end to make the total about 50km. James will then add another 30km to that (thus the "plus plus") with a ride starting at the Hyatt at 9:00 a.m. SHARP, which will hopefully meet up with the first group somewhere along the way. Back by 3:00 or so. Coffee.

See you on the trails.
