IT’S TIME TO BREAK OUT THE
SUNSCREEN!
Spring seems to have sprung. Saturday looks like around 19 degrees and sunny, with Sunday even a few degrees warmer but a few clouds; little wind. So I’m looking at an Odaiba Plus and a Jonan Plus respectively. In addition, ludicrous-level riders Chris and Peter are both offering more challenging hill-climbs on Sunday.
Please bring along an eco-bag for any convenience-store lunches. Not kidding.
Saturday Odaiba Plus
Our usual 30-km jaunt out to the beach by the bay for a brew or two, but with maybe 15-20 km tacked on to the front end to make it about 45. Bridges! Canals! Dedicated bike paths! Windmills! Beach bar lunch. Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 11:00 a.m. Back by around 3:30. Coffee
Sunday Jonan Plus
An easy 35-km lope out to another little beach park from which we watch the planes come in and then watch them go away again. Start at the Hyatt at 11:00, back by 2:00.
Sunday Takao Loop
This from Chris Kimber:
I will lead a ride this Sunday, doing a 'Takao Loop' leaving Daikanyama at 7am from Yarigasaki crossing. Will do a water/combini stop by Takao station before Takao climb about 50km into the ride and then will do two coffee/croissant/cake stops at Zebra on the way back after the climb. One near to Takao and one along the Onekan. Will be a roughly 110km loop back to Daikanyama and we will ride at a reasonable/fast pace but will wait at the top of the climb. Planning to be back anywhere between 1-2pm depending on the laziness of the coffee breaks. My keitai is 090 6496 9993
Sunday Escape from the Humdrum
And this from Peter Evans (please ask him if you need more details):
A ride from Itsukaichi, over one unusually attractive pass
(Tossaka, aka Tokisaka), down, up via the quietest (and most
challenging) of the three routes to the top of Tokyo's highest pass
(Kazahari, at 1146 metres). Then a long way downhill, a sit-down lunch
at Yakyūtei, and a leisurely trip along Okutama Mukashi-michi (or at
least its first half) to Okutama station.
Please examine https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44263947 . This is not
an introductory hill climb. RwGPS estimates that the whole route has
1300m of climbing (some of it steep); by comparison, going from
Takao-san-guchi station "up Takao" (i.e. to the top of Ōtarumi pass)
is about 200m of climbing.
The Tossaka climb is as described in
https://funq.jp/bicycle-club/article/560606/ ; the Kazahari climb in
the upper half of https://funq.jp/bicycle-club/article/560079/ ; for
"Mukashi-michi", just google 奥多摩むかし道.
Your tyres shouldn't be delicate. (But a gravel bike, let alone a
mountain bike, isn't necessary -- my own tyres are 28 mm.) There's
debris in places, and a steep descent, so tyres and brakes should be
in good condition. At one point we'll have to push our bikes up and
over the result of a landfill: so (i) an "electrically assisted" bike
would probably be prohibitively heavy, and (ii) think about your
shoes. Bring all that you'd need for fixing a puncture; also, a
windbreaker for the longer descent, cash for lunch, and lights for
tunnels.
Setting off at 09:00 from the Akiruno-Hinohara-kaidō branch of Family
Mart, https://maps.app.goo.gl/J4rYgWmBa9SwC3Wz7

hope you don't mind.)
