CAREFUL
OUT THERE

The summer heat can be dangerous. Don’t overdo, keep hydrated and rest if you need to.

This weekend I’ll offer a heat-beating night ride to Odaiba on Saturday and a short jaunt to Jonan Jima on Sunday. Also on Saturday, Peter will do a Yabitsu hill climb.

Saturday Night Odaiba

Start at the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills at 6:00 p.m. for a dazzling 30-km night ride out to the beach on the bay.  Quite a sight. Back by around 8:30.

Sunday Jonan

Start at the Hyatt at 11:00 a.m. for a quick 35-km run out to a little beach park across from Haneda Airport. Back by around 2:00.

Monthly Pink Cow Gathering July 9

Mark your calendars for July 9th, the second Wednesday of the month, when Half-Fasters traditionally descend on The  Pink Cow in Akasaka https://www.thepinkcow.com/  to scarf burritos, swill beverages and talk bikes.

Saturday Yabitsu

(From Peter)
Setting off (not just gathering) at 07:50 from the sole exit of Karakida station (Odakyū Tama line, across the street from a Family Mart).

The route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/51370607 . First, 25 km of suburbia/park/exurbia and kind-of-countryside brings us to the first convenience store stop. Then we really are out of the city. There’s a short stretch with pleasing views of lake Miyagase; at 29 km we turn onto Kanagawa route 70 and follow it up, over and down Yabitsu pass.

The road zigs and zags, the scenery changes. There aren’t many cars or motorbikes; there are very few trucks. You won’t be breathing in exhaust fumes. And for a stretch of 28 km, there are no traffic lights.

58 km from the start we'll veer east for lunch and Isehara station; but if you're pushed for time or worried about what's admittedly a rather scary tunnel, you can instead follow the road down to Hadano station.

Slowish. (I’m an old geezer.)

We nowhere go along rindō; surfaces aren't bad going uphill and are good everywhere else, and tyres of 23 mm and up should be fine. Your brakes must be in good condition.

As the RwGPS map says, the ride is 66 km and you climb 1250m. It's not a tough climb, but neither is it trivial.

Bring:
  • whatever you need in order to recover from a puncture
  • lights for a couple of tunnels
  • water bottle
  • cash (for lunch)
  • lock (for the bike, while you’re having lunch)

And if you’re using the train, of course you’ll need a rinkōbukuro. (Don’t have one? Read https://tinyurl.com/rinkoubukuro .)

If you’d prefer a GPX, FIT or other file to the RwGPS web page, then near the top left of the web page click “More | Export as File”.

Did I mention that the descent was fun? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SfB3BCFsFc

Sorry, no email address or phone number. (My phone expired on Wednesday evening. I hope I'll have acquired a replacement in time for the ride, but I'm not sure.)
